Birthday 22' - Let's be the change and support programs that stop violence before it begins.

By Allan Ball Join Me

1 in 4 women aged over 15 years of age is at risk of being in violent or abusive relationship in Australia.  In 2021 over 40 women have lost their lives at the hands of a male partner or previous male partners.  COVID-19 lockdown has only esculated the abuse with 1 in 6 women reporting that htey have exprienced some form or increased psychological abuse being in some form of Lockdown. The violence perpetrated by men against women must stop and it is up to men to stop it. Victims are not merely statistics; they are wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends. Good men cannot and will not sit on the sidelines while those they love are at risk of harm.

White Ribbon Australia is part of a global social movement working to eliminate gendered violence. We strive for an Australian society where all women and children are safe.  White Ribbon Australia is part of the worlds largest movement engaging men and boys to end men’s violence against women and girls, promote gender equity and create new opportunities for men to build positive, healthy and respectful relationships.

Where does the money go?

White Ribbon focuses on primary prevention work. This means stopping violence before it happens by addressing the root causes of men’s violence against women. Examples of White Ribbon’s primary prevention activities include:

  • Educational programs in schools, programs in workplaces.
  • Public information and awareness raising campaigns.
  • Bringing highly active individuals onboard the Community Partner program, providing them with ongoing learning opportunities and reflective practice to aid them in their work to prevent gendered violence.
  • Supporting grass-roots organisations already working in the family domestic violence space through a grants scheme to be established in 2021.
  • Funding research to identify gaps in family domestic violence education programs and services and find solutions to meet these needs; to help prevent violence, not just deal with the aftermath.
In 2022 we are aiming to set up community action groups to educate and support boys, young men and men to learn the ways to stop violence and abuse from occurring.

We need your support to do this. Eden Hills is very proud to partner with White Ribbon Australia to raise money for White Ribbon Day 2021 on Friday 19th November 2021.

A thousand reasons

There are a thousand reasons why I am so joyful right now, and they are all because to the funds you have helped White Ribbon Australia raise.

I am aware of the significance of our work to everyone of you who has contributed, and it will bring me great delight to help White Ribbon Australia carry on their excellent job by reflecting your gifts back to them.

Many thanks

10 Days to GO

It is 10 Days to go and I am so grateful for the support so far on the fundraising event and activity. Would love to get the Campaign across the Line!

$500 Mark

We have hit the $500 Mark. Which is incredible! Thank you for those who have supported or shared.

I have less than 20 days to go and was hoping to keep spreading the word to gain some more support.

My Why

Although we have no idea what occurs behind closed doors, we do know that domestic violence occurs, and it does so at a rate at which Australians should not be proud.

For the past 20 years, I've dealt with trauma, shame, rage, and guilt, which has made me more aware of how multifaceted domestic abuse is and how differently it affects various people.

I have had the privilege of working with the most wonderfully dedicated team of specialists over the past 24 months. They put in endless effort to engage men and boys in meaningful ways, to meet them where they are, and to help them to become a part of the solution.

One of Australia's biggest and most thorough prevention organisations, White Ribbon Australia, actively recruits men and boys to be the change that Australia needs to see rather than just talking about it.

Men must play a crucial part in putting a stop to male violence against women.

The field of initiatives to involve men and boys in the prevention of violence is expanding quickly across policy and programmatic areas, academia, advocacy, and activism. This is reflected in the expansion of national and international interventions and campaigns, as well as international agency activities and academic evaluations of their significance and impact.

We must first understand where men and boys stand before we can engage them in bringing about change. We need to understand men and boys' current attitudes towards violence against women, their role in gender relations, and other things if we hope to reach them, pique their initial interest, secure their participation, and inspire their continued commitment.

Men and boys are not inherently wicked; but the behaviors they choose to engage in can be. Other types of social inequality other than gender also shape men's and boys' lives. Any violence prevention initiatives that White Ribbon Australia chooses to do with any group of men or boys in any cultural context must embrace an intersectional approach.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the most well-known modern example of male collective action against violence against women. The focus of the campaign is on males wearing white ribbons to express their opposition to male violence against women. The current White Ribbon Campaign in Australia is not only the biggest White Ribbon Campaign in the world but also the most significant example of men's commitment to ending violence against women this nation has ever seen. Through primary prevention programming, workplace accreditation, thought leadership, and advocacy, White Ribbon Australia serves the Australian community. White Ribbon Australia connects men and boys to the issue and provides a welcoming environment for their participation.

The mobilisation of men and boys to be change agents in the settings where they feel most at home and capable of leading change is more important now than ever. It must take place on a far larger scale, with more frequency, and with more resources.

One woman every 9 days is murdered by a man in Australia.

What will we do now that we are aware of the statistics?
