A fellow colleague will be shaving my hair to a number 2 to assist in raising funds for White Ribbon.
Here's some information as to why I am supporting White Ribbon:-
  • White Ribbon Australia is a part of a global social movement working to eliminate gendered violence. We strive for an Australian society where all women and children are safe.
  • The White Ribbon Australia movement works through a primary prevention approach in communities, schools and workplaces across the country. Through our programs and campaigns, we engage with men to become active in the social change needed to stop men’s violence against women and children.
  • White Ribbon Australia operates in collaboration with, and alongside, many other organisations working to end men’s violence against women. Our focus is on mobilising men and boys and the community in a social movement to take action to eliminate men's violence and abuse against women.
  • Men’s violence against women is a social issue. It’s everybody’s issue to help end.
  • In this new chapter of White Ribbon Australia, we’re shifting from awareness-raising to advocacy and community-led violence prevention action. We’re thinking about how our collective power in solidarity with the broader movement to advance gender equality and women’s safety can create cultural and systemic change, and we’re working to invest the general public’s recognition of the white ribbon symbol with deeper significance – a call to action that says it’s not enough to know about it, it’s not enough to think it’s bad, it’s not enough to hope someone does something about it – it will take all of us, all in to create a future free from all forms of men’s violence and abuse.
  • You might’ve seen that we’ve joined the campaign with some women’s safety and women’s legal services across the country to criminalise coercive control. Since joining the campaign and driving it in some States, especially in Queensland, we’ve seen Bills presented to Parliament, inquires and reviews announced and the Queensland Government promise us the “best coercive control response in the world.”
  • We’re also advocating for governments to fill the gaps in men’s behaviour change programs from prevention through the perpetrator interventions, both in terms of building the evidence base and addressing service shortages.
  • We’ve added our voice to the call for 10 days universal paid family and domestic violence leave. We’ve called for the increased rate of JobSeeker to be retained permanently recognising the way this advances women’s financial security and safety.
  • And in terms of community mobilisation we’ve initiated community action groups recognising that the problem of men’s violence against women isn’t unique to any community but the solutions are.
